Chattarpur, Bhopal:
Damaged crops claimed yet another life as a farmer committed suicide in the Damoh district. The farmer killed himself after pests destroyed his lentil crop.
This is the second suicide in the last fifteen days and the third in the last three months.
The latest death comes just a week after more than a lakh farmers descended on Bhopal demanding regular power supply and compensation for crops damaged by natural calamities. The agitation was withdrawn after the state government promised action. No action, though, has been taken so far.
For the first time in Madhya Pradesh, a whopping 60% of the Kharif crop failed due to vagaries of nature. Prolonged power cuts and fertiliser shortage have only added to the farmers' woes.
According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), 8360 farmers have killed themselves since 2005. Madhya Pradesh is among the top five states in farmer suicides.
