Farmers on rampage against sugarcane prices

Muzaffarnagar: Farmer leader and Bharatiya Kissan Union chief Mahendra Singh Tikait's supporters have been on a rampage in West UP's Muzzafarnagar district.

The farmers are protesting against the recently fixed procurement price for sugarcane - Rs 130 per quintal. Tikait is demanding that the price be scaled up to at least Rs 170 per quintal.

On Sunday, farmers set fire to raw sugar stock being transported to a local sugar mill. The agitation is likely to intensify in the days to come, as Tikait is planning to organise several kissan mahasabhas in the region to mobilise support for a higher procurement price.

A couple of days ago, the Mayawati government too shot off a letter to the Prime Minister complaining about the recently introduced concept of Fair Remunerative Price.
