Surajpur, Chhattisgarh:
A video of a forest guard being mauled to death by a wild bear has surfaced in Chhattisgarh.
The incident, captured on a mobile phone, happened on December 21 in Premnagar area of Surajpur district.
The female bear had wandered into a village in the district on December 20 and after ransacking several homes for hours, killed a local. Villagers then informed the forest department which tried to chase away the bear. But one of its guards, KP Singh, was fatally attacked by the bear during the operation.
"People started to think that the bear was mentally ill. It had attacked the guard and some animals earlier. We had earlier tried to trap it also, but we weren't successful in it," said Kailash Chadra Bebarta, the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests.
The animal was subsequently shot dead by a joint team of officials from the forest department and the local police.
