Chennai: The father of a student of Chennai's Loyola School, a businessman, has been arrested for the attack on a teacher who allegedly beat his son two weeks ago.
The arrested man, Arulanandam, heads a private company in Chennai.
The attack on November 20 on the physical education teacher of the Loyola Matriculation School was caught on CCTV camera and led to protests by teachers and parents. A mob was seen barging into the school and assaulting the teacher, who is still being treated in hospital.
The police say the mob may have mainly included staff from Mr Arulanandam's company.
On Friday, a senior police officer was transferred for not acting fast on the case.
The police say the teacher was attacked because he allegedly beat the businessman's son, a class 8 student, for speaking in Tamil. Besides the father, the police have arrested 30 people.
A Tamil Nadu Child Rights body that visited the school last month said corporal punishment could not be established beyond doubt. The school has also denied that the teacher hit the child. "And even if it was true, then the assault of a teacher is not justified," said a school official.
