Jalpaiguri:
The daily wage earner who allegedly sold his newborn daughter to a teacher for Rs 25,000 was arrested today even as the police managed to rescue the baby from Mathabhanga area in West Bengal's Jalpaiguri.
"We have arrested Bulbul Haq, the baby's father from Dhupguri and produced him along with Atul Basak, the arrested teacher of Netajipara primary school, before the court today," Avaru Ravindranath, Superintendent of Police, Jalpaiguri said.
The court remanded the duo to three days' police custody.
The police were, however, yet to trace Partha Biswas, the school teacher from Mathabhanga area who allegedly bought the baby girl from Bulbul.
"The officers in Mathabhanga today rescued the baby from the house of Partha Biswas, but the school teacher is absconding. A search is on to trace his whereabouts.
"In the meantime, we have reunited the baby with her mother and have shifted both of them to the Korak Home in Jalpaiguri," the SP said.
Bulbul Haq's wife Salma Begum had delivered a baby girl at Moynaguri hospital on last Saturday.
On April 19, Salma was released from the hospital and once she went back home, her husband struck a deal with Partha Biswas, a school teacher of Mathabhanga area, to sell off the baby in exchange of Rs 25,000, the police had said.
The deal was struck with the help of another school teacher of Netajipara primary school in Dhupguri, Atul Basak, they added.
