New Delhi: The fair sex seems to be getting increasingly interested in the poll process, with the turnout of female voters in Delhi rising by 5 per cent, compared with the Lok Sabha polls in 2004.
The Parliamentary elections in Delhi, concluded on May 7, witnessed the turnout of women touching 49.57 per cent. However, the number of women exercising their franchise at relatively less urban or Muslim-dominated constituencies lagged.
Female voters account for 49.07 lakh of the 1.1 crore electorate in Delhi.
A look at the data available with the Delhi Election Commission suggests that women, particularly those from urban middle-class families and the new generation, keenly participated in the democratic process.
Among the seven constituencies, New Delhi, which has a sizable population of the middle and upper-class government employees as well businessmen, led the pack in the turnout of overall voters as well as that of women -- both at 55 per cent.
The constituency comprises two reserved assembly segments of Karol Bagh and Patel Nagar and eight general assembly seats, including Malviya Nagar, RK Puram and Greater Kailash, each of which witnessed the turnout of female voters at over 55 per cent.
