Yet another case of H1N1 flu -- fifth confirmed case in India -- has been confirmed in Hyderabad, triggering worries that the virus could be on an exponential curve.
The patient 28-year-old software engineer has been kept in isolation at Hyderabad's government chest hospital. He had gone on an official trip to Philadelphia and returned on May 31 by a British Airways flight.
"The co-passengers are being traced or monitored and the family is being counseled," said Dr Subhakar, Government Chest Hospital, Andhra Pradesh.
The Andhra Pradesh government is worried that three of the five confirmed cases in India have been detected in the state and is working out a contingency plan.
The authorities are worried that the number of H1N1 cases could take an exponential turn and that is why the national disaster management authority has drawn up strategies for not just the health sector but also the non-health sectors to ensure economic activity does not suffer in case a pandemic breaks out.
The worry is also because summer will soon recede and winter is round the corner.
The affected patients are under treatment according to protocol and their families are being counselled and given prophylactic treatment. Meanwhile, the first confirmed case, a 23-year-old, was discharged after treatment for a week and is now healthy.
