Fighting corruption through RTI

Fighting corruption through RTI
New Delhi: It was a familiar tale of corruption at the 24 children's homes in the capital. Money meant for food and clothes were being stolen by officials.

Raaj Mangal Prasad, a child rights activist started investigating it three years ago.

He filed an RTI application to look at the tenders for various items bought by these homes over the years.

Most of the tenders he found were fake!

For over two years Prasad collected and scrutinised enough documents through RTI and brought them to the Anti-Corruption Branch of the Delhi Government.

"An FIR was lodged. These senior officers of the rank of joint director were arrested and put behind bars. Eight of them were arrested," says Raaj Mangal Prasad, Program Director, Pratinidhi.

Since then, Prasad has received death threats. But he is winning.

"I am happy that the children are getting their due. The Cabinet has taken a decision to streamline the process and buy things from Kendriya Bhandar now," says Prasad.

Prasad hopes to keep up his scrutiny so that the 2,000 children in these homes do not go to bed hungry.
