Three masked men on a motorcycle were caught on CCTV hurling stones at the church

Mumbai:

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has told the police it has 48 hours to track down and arrest the men who attacked a church near Mumbai over the weekend.

Closed-circuit camera footage captured three masked men hurling stones at the church early on Saturday, prompting city police to file an initial case against "unknown people".

Despite the video, no arrests have been made so far.

On Friday, a church in Madhya Pradesh was vandalised. Earlier this month, a 72-year-old nun was raped at a convent school in West Bengal, which triggered protests across the country over the high levels of sexual violence and rise in attacks against churches and Christian buildings.

Last month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi pledged a crackdown on religious violence and to ensure freedom of worship for all faiths in the wake of a wave of attacks on churches, many of them in Delhi.
