Kolkata:
A major fire broke out at Circus telephone exchange at city's Hungerford street area on Tuesday night, seriously affecting at least 70,000 landlines, 10,000 broadband and over 3000 leased line customers, according to a BSNL spokesman.
The spokesman said functioning of 55 remote satellite exchanges under Circus telephone exchange was also seriously hit by the fire.
Fire Brigade sources said that 15 fire tenders were fighting the blaze, which originated in the transmission room in the first floor of the exchange.
However, there was no report of any casualty.
The area being heavily congested the firefighters faced a lot of difficulty to reach the spot. Thick smoke billowing from the exchange caused a lot of inconvenience to the locals.
Police have cordoned off the area to facilitate smooth fire fighting operation.
The cause of the fire and extent of damage was yet to be ascertained.
