A level-4 fire broke out on the 19th floor of a residential building in Mumbai's Lalbaug area today, leaving one person dead and several others injured. The fire is under control and efforts are on to ensure it doesn't erupt again, an official said. The incident took place at the city's luxury One Avighna Park society.
The visuals showed a man falling from the building's 19th floor that was engulfed in flames. The massive fire sent thick plumes of black smoke in the air that could be seen for miles.
A senior KEM Hospital official said that the man, identified as Arun Tiwari, 30, was brought to the hospital at around 12.45 pm. He was declared brought dead.
Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar and other senior district officials have reached the spot to oversee the rescue operation soon after the incident.
"The Fire and Rescue department reached the spot as soon as they received the news about the incident. So many people have been rescued and the efforts are still on. One man jumped off the building in panic. We can't say that the fire fighting team failed in this. Please don't spread rumours," Ms Pednekar said.
Senior Mumbai civic body official Iqbal Chahal said that fire has been "doused and one casualty has been reported so far."
"Officials from our fire department reached here around 11.55 am. The fire had reached the 20th floor by that time. The fire has been doused now but officials are still there to ensure that the fire doesn't erupt again," Mr Chahal said.
