First Oscar, now Wimbledon for nine-year-old Pinki

Varanasi: Don't be surprised when you see a little Indian girl sharing the centre-stage with the two of the men finalists this Wimbledon. Pinki, a nine-year-old girl from Uttar Pradesh, will flip the coin that will decide who gets to hit the first serve in the grand finale.

The little girl says she wants to look her best when she steps on the grass at the Grand Centre Court and is busy shopping in Varanasi for her trip to London.

Four years ago, Pinki was all smiles when a film inspired by her cleft lip surgery, 'Smile Pinki' bagged the Oscar for the 'Best Documentary'. The 39-minute documentary captures Pinki's surgical transformation.

Celebrated as the face for noble cause, she is now being flown to London by the Smile Train foundation.

Dr Subodh, who performed the life-changing surgery on Pinki, says, "She would veil herself with her mother's sari, she would not play with the other children, not go to school. Now she does everything".

Pinki's father, who also gets to travel with her, is also beaming. "I am very happy. She had gone to America. Now she will go to London."

So on the July 7, tune in live to Wimbledon and don't forget to smile when you see little Pinki from Mirzapur rubbing shoulders with tennis icons.
