First time in 11 years, air services to Srinagar suspended
Srinagar: The entire Kashmir valley was placed under curfew early on Tuesday morning after the spiral of violence that killed 17 people and injured 45 others on Monday. (Read: 17 dead, 45 injured; J&K govt appeals for calm).

Protesters however defied the curfew in Baramulla where two people were injured in clashes with the police.

For the first time since the Kargil War 11 years ago, air services to and from Srinagar have been suspended. There will be no flights for the next 3 days.

While no official reason has been given for the suspension of air services, it has been a huge challenge for security forces to escort passengers and airline staff to Awantipura airbase where all flight operations were shifted 10 days ago.

Flights to Srinagar were being diverted to Awantipora airbase since September 3 due to resurfacing work at the only civilian airport, which is expected to be completed by September 15.

Violence erupted in Pampore, located on route to Awantipura airbase, on Monday leading to the death of 3 people.
