A major accident took place on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway in the wee hours today, killing five youths and critically injuring one. All the deceased were engineering students.
Police claims that the car in which the youths were travelling was being driven rashly, and was speeding. Due to this, the car dashed into a divider and fell in a quarry, some 200 feet below.
Out of the six youths, cops have identified three based on their college identity cards recovered. They are Aditya Dipak Bandarkar, Yash Ajay Shirali and Abhishek Arun Roy.
According to Kamshet police, "The deceased youths were in the age group of 21-23. They were travelling in a black-coloured Maruti Suzuki Ciaz. Based on eyewitnesses' statements, it seems the youths were driving the car rashly and overtaking in the wrong lane. The mishap took place after the car moved out of Kamshet tunnel near Pavana Chowky around 3.25 am. The car initially dashed into the road divider and later plunged into a quarry. The speed of the car was uncontrollable, due to which it was moving in reverse gear."
He added, "From the identity cards, it has been found out that the students were engineering students from D. Y Patil College and Navale College in Pune. The parents and college authorities have been alerted. One of the victims is critical and has been kept in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Lokmanya Hospital in Nigdi while the dead bodies have been sent for post-mortem.
An accidental case is being registered at the Kamshet police station, which falls under the jurisdiction of Pune Rural police.
