Five suspected militants arrested in Jammu and Kashmir, plot to kill cops foiled

Jammu: Five suspected militants have been arrested with heavy arms and ammunition in connection with a botched plot to kill security personnel near Thathri Police Station in Doda district.

The five suspected ultras named Abdul Rashid, Akhter Hussain, Mohammad Rafi, Altaf Hussain and Mohammad Yaqoob were arrested yesterday in Doda, police said.

Police have also seized one AK-56 rifle, 3 Magazines of AK-56, 143 rounds of AK-56 rifle, one Chinese Pistol, Magazine of Chinese Pistol, five rounds of Chinese Pistol, two Chinese Grenades and two Walkie Talkie wireless sets from them.

Police alleged that they had planned to attack the security personnel by hurling grenade on Thathri Police Station on the intervening night of April 27 and 28, but the grenade fell just short of the police station averting casualties.

"The accused arrested in the case are being interrogated," police spokesman said.

He said during questioning it was found that the arms and ammunition were received by Abdul Rashid who later gave them to the four other arrested persons.

"The task of grenade hurling was given to Altaf Hussain and the task of selective killings of police officers and jawans, civilians and prominent persons in Bhaderwah and Thathri areas of the district was given to Rafi and Akhter," he said.

Investigations are on to trace the supplier of the arms and ammunition, he said.

"Since there is no active and confirmed terrorist in the district, source of the arms ammunition provided to the five arrested persons is being investigated and a case is also being investigated from all other angles other than the terrorist angle," he said.
