Heavy rainfall has disrupted normal life in south Rajasthan, as areas bordering Gujarat are battling a flood like situation for the past few days. Army helicopters and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams on motorboats have been pressed into service, rescuing more than 50 people so far.
Tourists have been stranded in the popular spot of Mount Abu as the road link has been cut off due to landslides. There is no power supply at the hill station, electricity lines have been down for the past two days due to incessant rain.
Jalore is one of the worst affected districts due to heavy rains for the third consecutive day. A breach in the Panchala dam has led to waterlogging in Sanchore town, and nearly 53 people have been rescued so far. They have been moved to a temporary shelter in the premises of the local grain market.
A local resident said, " The town is water logged , not only the low lying areas but most of the houses have been flooded , we have had no water and no electric supply for the past two days , neither have food packets reached us."
The maximum rainfall of 408 milimetres has been reported from Sirohi district, while Mount Abu has received 319 milimetres of rain in the past twenty four hours.
The state Disaster Relief Management Minister, Gulab Chand Katariya told NDTV, "The rains have been unprecedented. We have reports of five people being swept away due to flood waters, rescue operations are being carried out by the NDRF teams in co-ordination with the district administration and police."
Five Army helicopters, three NDRF teams and 15 motorboats have been pressed into service for carrying out rescue operations.
