Hyderabad:
It's been a flood of woes and a drought of relief in Andhra Pradesh, that's why the state that faced one of its worst droughts till one month ago and the worst flooding in history this month, has sought financial help of over Rs 21000 crore for drought and flood relief work.
"We are asking the Centre to treat this as unprecedented, as something of this magnitude has not happened before, and treat this as a serious calamity," said Dharmanna Prasad Rao, Andhra Pradesh Revenue Minister.
Muthyalu is like the lakhs of farmers across the state whose parched lands waited for water but that ultimately washed away what was built over a lifetime.
"I borrowed more than Rs one lakh for the crop. Now I have lost everything. Only if the government helps me out, I will be able to stand on my feet again," said Muthyalu.
Nine hundred and eighty one mandals in the state were declared drought-hit by September 22. This month, 87 mandals were declared flood-hit.
Love in the times of cholera. Much like that, it's been floods in the time of a drought in Andhra Pradesh. That may make the outlook for the coming Rabi season a wee bit more positive. But the state government would not like to say so at least till the financial help comes in from the Centre.
