Floods hit Bihar; drought in Jharkhand

Patna, Ranchi:

Bihar is back to battling its flood problems, and this time it's the Sitamarhi district in the state which is bearing the brunt of the swollen Bagmati river.

About 40 villages are seeing flooding, and almost 40,000 people are getting affected. The biggest worry is the 60 metre long embankment of the Bagmati river that has been breached.

In past too there has been frequent inundation in Sitamarhi district, but this year, the breach has been due to rain and discharge of water from Nepal, not from Bihar. the state government has ordered relief work and has also asked for an inquiry to determine the exact cause behind the embankment breach.

Meanwhile, neighbouring Jharkhand is facing a very different problem - lack of rainfall.

And the rain crisis is so severe that all 24 districts of Jharkhand have been declared drought-hit. The administration has cleared an outlay of Rs 11.19 crore for relief measures.
