Fog chaos across North India; grid trips again

Fog chaos across North India; grid trips again
New Delhi: It's not been a severe winter this year, but much of North India remained fogged out. On Saturday, the northern grid tripped again due to fog, badly affecting Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir.

A senior official of Punjab State Electricity Board said in Chandigarh that it will take 6 to 7 hours to restore the power supply.

Several parts of the national capital also went without electricity late on Saturday night -- for the second time in a day -- following a major breakdown in the Northern grid.

A Delhi Transco official said the technical problem in the grid occurred at around 10 pm resulting in massive disruption of power supply.

"As of now, I can't specify the areas affected by the problem in the grid but many areas across the city faced power cuts because of the technical problem in the grid," he said adding a 440kv line was totally shut down because of the failure.

Several long-distance trains, which left Delhi after 9.45 pm, were stranded in nearby areas due to lack of power supply, said railway sources.

Reports of power supply breakdown also came in from Jammu and Srinagar.

Heavy fog reduced visibility sharply halting vehicular traffic movement on the streets of Delhi and other places in the region as drivers chose to stop their vehicles on roadsides.

The northern part of the country reeled under a power crisis as the northern grid had tripped around 3.02 am on Saturday following a technical problem in the transmission lines triggered by the fog and cold conditions.

The Meteorological Department has, meanwhile, forecasted foggy conditions are beyond the next 24 hours as well.

Earlier on Saturday, there were three train accidents in Uttar Pradesh due to poor visibility.

The Delhi-Allahabad Prayagraj Express was at the station when the Gorakhdham Express hit it from behind in dense fog at around 9 am. An hour earlier near Etawah, at least 13 persons were injured when the Delhi-bound Licchavi Express rammed into the stationary Delhi-Islampur Magadh Express.

In a third incident, the Saryu Express from Allahabad to Faizabad collided with a maintenance trolley near Allahabad. Two people were injured.
