Gurdaspur: The police officer who has said he was abducted by Pakistani terrorists before they raced away with his SUV was questioned for a second time on Wednesday, with investigators recreating his encounter based on his description of what happened to him on the night of December 31.
The National Investigation Agency or NIA is deconstructing the deadly weekend terror attack that martyred seven military personnel and injured another 20 at the Pathankot air force base, just 30 kilometers from the border with Pakistan. They say that Punjab Police officer Salwinder Singh has contradicted himself, and the accounts of his two companions while elaborating on how he was carjacked by men dressed in fatigues and armed with AK-47s. The terrorists from Pakistan then entered the air force base where they began firing indiscriminately before dawn on January 2. The operations to kill them and secure the base, where fighter jets and attack helicopters are kept, took nearly 80 hours.
Mr Singh was taken yesterday to the spot near Kolian village where he says his car was flagged down. His friend, a jeweler who was driving, pulled over, he has said, because they thought they had approached a police check point. The terrorists allegedly took the jeweler with them while leaving behind the officer and his cook on the road, their arms and legs tied up.
The jeweler, Rajesh Verma, and cook, Madan Gopal, have also been questioned.
The trio was reportedly on the way back from visiting a shrine near the border when the terrorists abducted them. But investigators say that there are unsatisfactory explanations for what happened over three hours between the men leaving the shrine and being attacked.
Mr Singh told NDTV earlier this week, "Hang me if I am lying." He says that after managing to unbind himself, he phoned his superiors who treated his case as one of armed robbery. Several hours were wasted in sounding an alert for the military high-value asset of the air force base.
