For Inviting JNU Teacher To Event, Professor Suspended In Jharkhand

Dr Shreya Bhattacharji is an associate professor with the Centre for English Languages at Central University of Jharkhand.

Ranchi: A Jharkhand university professor has been suspended for inviting a teacher from the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) to an event.

Shreya Bhattacharji, an associate professor, has been accused by the government-run Central University of Jharkhand of "tarnishing" the institution by inviting JNU professor MN Panini to an event to mark the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel earlier this month.

The event was held in the university between March 17 and 19.

In an order on Monday, the university said: "Professor Panini is the mentor of the group of students of JNU, who were involved in anti-national activities in JNU recently."

The order alleged that Dr Bhattacharji invited the JNU teacher "without examining his credentials" and it led to state Governor Draupadi Murmu, who was chief guest to the event, opting out.

A spokesperson for the governor told NDTV she had never accepted the invitation for the programme.

The suspension order was signed by Vice Chancellor Nand Kumar Yadav.

"We suspected that the governor cancelled her programme because Professor Panini was coming. An enquiry committee has been formed. We will look into all this," Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Nand Kumar Yadav, said.

JNU has been at the centre of a massive controversy over the arrest last month of students including Kanhaiya Kumar on sedition charges, for their alleged role in an event in support of terrorist Afzal Guru, where anti-India slogans were raised.

Sources close to Dr Bhattacharji, say she is in Kolkata, that she is unwell and has been kept under observation.
