A young couple in Alirajpur, Madhya Pradesh, was stripped, beaten and forced to drink urine for marrying against the wishes of the family.
In a video filmed by one of the accused, the man can be seen tied to a pole and the half stripped girl sitting next to him. While letting them go, the accused allegedly told the woman that the punishment was revenge for "hurting the family's pride."
The man, 23 and the woman, 21, both living in the same village of Alirajpur, had got married in May against the wishes of her parents. To smooth things over with the woman's family after the marriage, the man had paid them Rs 70,000 in cash and two goats.
But after a decision from the caste panchayat, the couple was attacked on Saturday.
"They came back from Gujarat last week and was staying at the house of her husband's uncle.
The girl's parents came to know about this and kidnapped them at gunpoint on July 25," said Vikas Kapis, a local police officer.
In their complaint to the police, the couple said some relatives of the woman picked them up from home around 4 am at gunpoint. They partially stripped the woman, chopped off her hair and mercilessly beat them up.
The police said the couple approached them after the incident and filed a complaint against the girl's father, her two uncles and three others. "We have arrested two of the accused," the officer said.
