PM Narendra Modi advised Mr Kumawat to now devote his energies to a positive cause for nation-building, a statement from the Prime Minister's Office said.
New Delhi:
Two years ago, a BJP supporter in Rajasthan pledged to walk barefoot until Narendra Modi became prime minister. After all this time, Balwant Kumawat from Bhilwara wore slippers today only after meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
"When he was announced as the BJP's candidate in 2013, I swore that I would not wear slippers till Narendra Modi becomes the Prime Minister and I meet him," said Mr Kumawat.
He says he walked across towns and cities without slippers or shoes and campaigned for Mr Modi.
Even after PM Modi won the 2014 national elections with a sweeping majority, the BJP activist held on to his pledge and swore that he would only slip on footwear after he met the Prime Minister.
"Balwant Kumawat is a very energetic swayamsevak. He contributes immensely to every election campaign for him," a BJP activist Deepak Parik says.
After months of writing to BJP leaders and lawmakers, Mr Kumawat's dream finally came true today.

"He (Prime Minister Modi) also urged Shri Kumawat not to take a pledge which would cause physical discomfort," it added.
