New Delhi: The Congress has issued a barbed response to foreign minister Sushma Swaraj's tough speech at the United Nations General Assembly, which ripped apart Pakistan. This morning, a tweet from party vice president Rahul Gandhi read, "Sushma ji, thank you for finally recognising Congress governments' great vision and legacy of setting up IITs and IIMs".
The jibe was directed at the BJP and its leaders who have lost no opportunity to criticise what they call "60 years of Congress governance". His reference was to Ms Swaraj's comment that since Independence, India had focussed on nation-building, whereas Pakistan had concentrated only on exporting terror.
"We set up IITs, IIMs, AIIMS and ISRO. What did Pakistan make? They set up Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammed, Haqqani Network, Hizbul Mujahiddeen," Ms Swaraj said in the 21-minute speech that named Pakistan twice and took on its president Shahid Khaqan Abbasi.
Last night, Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala had posted a series of tweets on Ms Swaraj's speech. "Thank @SushmaSwaraj ji for stating hard facts about INDIA & Pak at UN.Befitting reply to those who ask what happaned in last 70 years," he tweeted.
A second tweet carried the sting:
A third asked the government to take action. "Time to move words into action as Pak still receives $743million annual U.S aid, collaborates with China on CPEC & buys arms from Russia," the tweet read.
Mr Gandhi's comment comes days after his speech at New York's Times Square, in which he attacked the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi and spoke of "divisive politics" that was "ruining India's reputation of peace and harmony abroad". The remarks had drawn sharp responses from the BJP, which said his attack on the PM on foreign soil was "deplorable".
