The two forest officers were attacked by a group of seven smugglers.
Two forest officials have been killed by a group of unidentified people in Nallamala forest in Guntur district, Andhra Pradesh, while on duty.
While on their rounds, the forest officers - Dadli Lazar, 45 and Sheik Baji Sahid, 40 - had intercepted a group of seven smugglers on Saturday morning, said sources in the forest office.
They were chopping up trees and loading them onto a vehicle.
The officials notified the Vinukonda Forest Range Office, asking for back-up. But by the time a team reached, the smugglers were gone after attacking the two officers. One of the officers was dead, the other was seriously injured and died later.
Investigation into the matter is on.
