Former Army Chief VK Singh rules out contesting polls

Washington: Former Army Chief General VK Singh has ruled out contesting the forthcoming general elections next year.

General Singh refuted media reports that he is likely to contest polls on a BJP ticket from Raibareli. He said that the question of contesting under political parties does not arise.

General Singh, who is currently in the US accompanying anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare, said that he is working towards putting up a people's candidate in the next Lok Sabha elections.

He dismissed the media reports in a statement given to PTI by his spokesperson, describing them as "wrong and malicious".

He also refuted claims that he has discussed the plans to contest with top BJP leaders.

The former Army Chief, addressing Indian students at the University of Maryland, had said that he and Anna Hazare would resume their nationwide tour from Bihar under the banner of recently formed Jantantra Morcha or the Democratic Front.

"The journey is long. It needs support for all people who think for India," he had said in his address to the students.
