Mr Paswan was shot dead while campaigning for his wife who is contesting the local panchayat election. He was a member of the LJP, the party headed by union minister Ram Vilas Paswan.
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has been trying to rebut claims of growing lawlessness or jungle raj in Bihar. After his party placed poorly in the national election, Mr Kumar quit as Chief Minister as a self-penalty, and installed Mr Manjhi as his replacement. When he decided to return to office, Mr Manjhi refused to oblige by stepping down, was expelled from their party, and then launched his own political outfit.
