New Delhi: Former BJP leader Jaswant Singh continues to be on life support systems after he was operated upon for a head injury at the Army Research and Referral Hospital in Delhi following a fall at his residence.

He is under constant monitoring by a team of neurosurgeons and critical care experts at the hospital, an update on his condition issued by the Defence Ministry said today.

The former Union minister's vital parameters are stable but he continues to be in coma, it said.

Mr Singh, a former defence minister, was brought to the hospital at around 1 am on Friday "with an injury to his head," according to a statement by the ministry.

Examination at the hospital showed him to be in coma, it said.

The senior politician was found unconscious at his home in the capital and was rushed by his family to the hospital, where he was operated upon.

Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh visited the hospital today; senior BJP leader LK Advani and former party president Rajnath Singh had visited it yesterday.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Mr Singh's family and prayed for his "speedy recovery," the Prime Minister's Office said.

The 76-year-old leader was expelled from the BJP earlier this year after he decided to contest the general elections from his home district Barmer in Rajasthan as an Independent when the party fielded someone else. The former Armyman lost the election.

Mr Singh held the important finance, defence and external affairs portfolios in previous BJP-led governments at the Centre.
