New Delhi: Former Delhi Police Commissioner BS Bassi has been appointed to the Union Public Service Commission, the central body that is in charge of civil services exams.
Mr Bassi ended a controversial term as chief of Delhi Police in February.
He was reportedly interested in a senior role in the country's top anti-graft agency, the Central Information Commission, but was dropped as a candidate because of strong opposition by the Congress.
The committee that appoints Information Commissioners is headed by the Prime Minister, and includes the Congress Leader Mallikarjun Kharge and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley.
In his tenure as the Delhi Police boss, Mr Bassi clashed frequently with Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who accused him of operating as "a BJP agent" who was committed to undermining the Delhi government upon the orders of the Centre.
Mr Bassi played a prime role in the controversy over the arrest of JNU student Kanhaiya Kumar for sedition and clashes that took place at a Delhi court between lawyers and supporters of Mr Kumar.
As the televised violence triggered the Supreme Court to rush over senior lawyers to investigate, Mr Bassi said the situation was not out of hand.
