Four soldiers were killed in an incident of firing inside Bathinda military station in Punjab this morning. They belonged to an artillery unit of the army.
The area has been sealed off and quick response teams are conducting a search, the Army's South Western Command has said.
An INSAS assault rifle and ammunition that went missing two days ago and suspected to be the weapon used in the incident has been found, the army said in a statement.
The army and Punjab Police are jointly investigating the incident, and they will do a forensic analysis of the assault rifle.
The balance number of rounds in the weapon will only be available after the forensic analysis, the army said.
No one has been identified or detained in connection with the incident, the army said.
A first information report (FIR) filed by a Major says the firing was reported at 4:30 am today and some unidentified masked men in kurta-pyjama were seen. The FIR says one of the men had an INSAS assault rifle, while another carried an axe. They fled towards a jungle near the military station, the police complaint said.
