4 Road Accidents In Manipur Today, 20 Dead

At least 20 people died on Monday in four separate road accidents in Manipur.

Guwahati: At least 20 people have died today in four separate road accidents in Manipur. The newly-appointed Biren Singh government has announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh each to the families of those who have died in today's accidents.

In the first incident which took place at around 3.45 AM this morning in Manipur's Senapati district, about 65 km from the state capital of Imphal,  a private bus running overnight from Nagaland's Dimapur to Imphal went off the road and fell into a rivulet, killing 11 and injuring at least 30. Assam Rifles personnel, who were patrolling in the area, rescued the passengers. While eight passengers died on the spot, two were declared brought dead at a nearby hospital.

Official sources said one person has died later in the hospital.

While eight of the critically injured have been rushed to Imphal for better treatment, the rest are being treated in various hospitals in Senapati. The Manipur police have started an investigation into the incident.

The second incident also took place in the remote Senapati district, where a truck went off the road and fell in a gorge killing the driver on the spot and critically injuring the helper.

The third road accident took place on National Highway-37, the Imphal-Jiribam road -where a passenger jeep lost control and fell in a 300 feet-deep gorge. Eight passengers - two women and six men -- died and several others were injured.

In another incident, two people were critically injured after a Maruti van turned upside down in Bishnupur district around 2.30 PM today.
