Workers at the BCPL premises in Dibrugarh district of Assam
Dibrugarh:
Four workers died today at the Brahmaputra Cracker and Polymer Limited (BCPL) in Dibrugarh district of Assam while there were working inside a polypropylene storage tank inside the petrochemical factory premises.
While other workers alleged that shortage of oxygen led to the deaths, the police say it is a matter of investigation.
District SP Rana Bhuyan told Press Trust of India that while two labourers, Hiren Gogoi and Harish Cheleng, died before reaching the hospital, Gajen Gogoi and Hemanta Das, two others, died during treatment.
Shortly after the incident, angry workers ransacked another office within the premises and set it on fire.
BCPL is a subsidiary of Gail India Limited and is implementing the North-east's first petro-chemical project. The project is expected to increase scope for substantial investment in setting up of downstream plastic processing industries, thereby generating both direct and indirect employment.
