Four Years After Nirbhaya, 'Situation Remains Same', Says Her Mother

Nirbhaya's mother Asha Devi claims that nothing has changed as far as women's safety is concerned.

New Delhi: Four years after the brutal gang-rape, Nirbhaya's mother's hope for justice seems to have dwindled, as the convicts who were sentenced to death continue to remain in Delhi's Tihar jail.

Asha Devi claims that nothing has changed in these years as far as women's safety is concerned.

The December 16 gang-rape and murder of the paramedical student, dubbed Nirbhaya, in a moving bus had shocked and enraged India and made international headlines and prompted the government to take a re-look at laws concerning crimes against women.

"We feel nothing has changed. The governments have also changed. It has been four years but the situation remains the same. For the last four years, we have been running from pillar to post to get justice. But no action has been taken against the accused," she said.

Of the six men arrested in the case, one was a juvenile. Another, Ram Singh, who was driving the bus, was found hanging in jail in March 2013. Four others - Akshay, Vinay Sharma, Pawan and Mukesh - are lodged in jail as they have appealed against their death penalty.

According to Delhi Police statistics, 2,199 rape cases were reported in the capital in 2015 while till November 30 this year, 1,981 cases of rape have been registered.

As per National Crime Records Bureau, Delhi has the highest rate of crimes against women among all the cities in the country. Last year, the total number of cases of crime against women in Delhi was 17,104.

This year, the government has allocated Rs. 200 crore to the Nirbhaya fund - the fund set up in memory of Nirbhaya. The fund supports government initiatives to protect women and children from sexual crimes and provide compensation for survivors.
