Free cycles for 10,000 priests, says Karunanidhi
Chennai: To help temple priests arrive at temples on time, a "free bicycle scheme" for them was launched on Monday by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi in Chennai, costing Rs 2.78crore to the exchequer.

As per announcements by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment department during the budget session early this year, Karunanidhi launched the campaign which would benefit about 10,000 priests living in the state, a government release said.

Karunanidhi himself has given suitable orders to implement the scheme. As part of the launch today, about 200 priests from Chennai, Kancheepuram, Vellore were given cycles.

The scheme would be implemented across the state in a phased manner, the release said.

Law Minister Durai Murugan, HR and CE Minister Periyakaruppan and senior government officials participated in the event, it added.
