Freed from jail, Samajwadi Party MLA gives cash to cops

Allahabad: Jails in Uttar Pradesh have been infamous for giving VIP treatment to political inmates.

And the camaraderie between cops who guard these prisons and politicians was once again on display on Tuesday when Samajwadi Party MLA from Gyanpur, Vijay Mishra, was released on bail after spending one and a half years in jail.

On his release, Mr Mishra's daughter Seema was caught on camera handing out Rs 500 tips to the constables who were posted at the Naini Central jail, near Allahabad.

Three constables - Vijay Sonkar, Gulaab and Raj Kumar, who were seen on camera taking money - have been suspended for their action.

Recently, Mr Mishra and another criminal MLA Mukhtar Ansari despite being behind bars had attended a lunch hosted by the Samajwadi Party for Pranab Mukherjee in the run up to the presidential polls. The two only had permission to attend the proceedings of the Assembly.

Vijay Mishra has 62 criminal cases against him and is the main accused in a murderous bomb attack carried out on former BSP minister Nand Gopal Nandi in July 2010. Almost a dozen people were injured and Mr Nandi's personal guard and an Indian Express reporter were killed in the attack.
