Srinagar: High altitude areas of Kashmir valley have received fresh snowfall, the second in this month, while the plains were lashed by intermittent rains leading to a sharp drop in temperature.

The maximum temperature witnessed a dip following snowfall in the high altitude areas since Monday, a spokesman of the MET office told PTI.

The peripheral areas of famous hill resorts of Pahalgam in south, Gulmarg in north and Sonamarg in central Kashmir recorded the second snowfall this month, officials said adding the snowfall continued intermittently for the second day on Tuesday.

The day temperature in Srinagar dipped to 17.4 degree Celsius - five degress below normal for this part of the season.

Srinagar, which recorded a high of 19.2 degree Celsius on Monday, witnessed a warmer night at 8.2 degree Celsius - six degrees above normal.

The night temperature showed several degrees improvement due to cloudy sky.

However, Leh and Kargil towns in frontier region of Ladakh recorded a low of 3.2 and 3.4 degree Celsius, respectively, which was the lowest in any part of the state, the spokesman said.

Srinagar and other plains were lashed by a brief spell of incessant rains on Monday evening and Tuesday afternoon.
The upper reaches of Kashmir Valley recorded the first snowfall on October 4, leading to a sudden change in the weather following a dip the mercury.
