The BJP's new president Nitin Gadkari has created a storm after he accused Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav and Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Lalu Prasad of betraying the Opposition on the recent cut motions in Parliament, and allegedly used abusive language about the two leaders at a BJP rally in Chandigarh.

Gadkari's remarks came in the context of his criticism of the two Yadavs for their not backing the cut motions and how some people had helped Congress.

Gadlari has since apologised for his remarks.

"I was only using a proverb. I only used this with reference to the CBI. They are respectable leaders. If they are hurt by my comments, I take back my words," said Nitin Gadkari.

This is the first big controversy for the BJP president and is unusual for the low-profile Nitin Gadkari.

Reacting to Gadkari's statements, Samajwadi Party's UP state president and MP Akhilesh Yadav said, "Samajwadi Party follows Dr Ram Manohar Lohia's principles. It has faith in healthy, decent democracy, we do not believe in using foul language even against our political rivals."
