Gajendra Chauhan Meets RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat, Calls Him 'Father Figure'

Gajendra Chouhan, a small time TV actor, was appointed to head the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune amid massive protests from students.

New Delhi: Gajendra Chauhan, whose appointment by the government as the chief of film training institute FTII ignited massive protests last year, visited the headquarters of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh or RSS today.

Mr Chauhan met RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat for half an hour.

He told reporters that he had met Mr Bhagwat to invite him to his son's wedding. The RSS chief, he added, "is like a father to me."

The RSS is the ideological mentor of the ruling BJP and is based in Maharashtra's Nagpur.

The appointment of Mr Chauhan, a small time actor best known for playing Yudhishthir in the TV version of Mahabharata, fueled protests by thousands of students at the Film and Television Institute of India.

The government was attacked by the opposition and accused of elevating its own loyalists to top posts. Despite being derided as a person lacking the credentials for the post, Mr Chauhan refused to resign.

The students called off their 139-day-long strike in October and Mr Chauhan also stayed.

He told reporters today that students will be allowed to study one more year if they do not clear the course in time but they will not be given campus accommodation for the extra year.
