Four gangsters were arrested in two separate encounters in Punjab today, the police said. While two were arrested in the Mohali district, the other two were taken into custody in the Tarn Taran district.
One of the gangsters was shot in the leg as he opened fire at the police while trying to flee.
The gangsters arrested in Mohali have been accused of firing outside the residence of a Congress leader in Kurali, the police said. Both are said to be the associates of gangster Prince Chauhan.
In Tarn Taran, Punjab Police arrested the two gangsters while they fired at them when asked to stop during a routine check post.
One of the arrested gangsters in Tarn Taran has been identified as Raju Shooter, who was involved in a bank robbery.
Earlier on Wednesday, an arrested gangster was killed in an exchange of fire with the Punjab Police while he was trying to flee in Amritsar's Jandiala Guru area.
Amritpal Singh, 22, was arrested on Tuesday and was taken to Jandiala Guru for the recovery of two kg of heroin.
He fired at the police team from a pistol hidden there while in handcuffs and tried to flee, the officials said.
Punjab Police have launched a major crackdown against gangsters with as many as 11 encounters taking place in the last two weeks.
