Internet remained suspended in Uttar Pradesh's Prayagraj district on Sunday, and large gatherings were banned across the state, a day after the sensational killing of gangster-politician Atiq Ahmed on camera.

Lovelesh Tewari, Sunny Singh, and Arun Maurya, the three men in their twenties who shot and killed Ahmed were sent to judicial custody for 14 days after they were produced in court.
According to the police, the three men have said that they wanted to make a name for themselves by eliminating Ahmed's gang. They had planned the killing carefully and had followed Ahmed the entire day.
Atiq Ahmed's body, along with that of his brother Ashraf who was also killed, was buried in their village in Prayagraj after a post-mortem. His sons performed the last rites.
Opposition parties stepped up their attack on the Uttar Pradesh government over the daring murder, with Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav saying that the state is "in the grip of jungle raj".
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath held meetings with district police chiefs and other senior officials and asked them to ensure calm across the state.
The government has not taken any action against the policemen tasked with protecting Ahmed amid growing questions about the lapses that led to the incident.

Ahmed, a former parliamentarian convicted of kidnapping, was shot dead along with his brother while police were escorting them for a medical check-up on Saturday. The incident was caught on live television.
The assailants had been posing as journalists. They shouted slogans of 'Jai Shri Ram' after the killings and surrendered. The police did not fire a single shot and most were seen ducking away.
