New Delhi: Assembly elections for the 40 seats in Goa will be held on February 4, the Election Commission has announced today. The results will be announced on March 11. In the 2012 assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in alliance with Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) notched victory trouncing the Congress out of power. This time the ruling BJP faces challenge from the Arvind Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party, which has promised "special status" for the state if it comes to power.

In Goa, the AAP has named former Inspector General of Prisons Elvis Gomes as the Chief Ministerial candidate.
Mr Gomes, 53 -- the Inspector General (Prisons) and part of the Urban Development department - had taken voluntary retirement from his government job in July last year and joined AAP.
"The countdown has started for the ruling parties in Punjab and Goa," AAP's convener and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said, adding that his party had no objection to both Punjab and Goa voting on the same day.
