Velguem: Free tablet computers would be distributed to students of Class 5 and 6 in the next academic year, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said.

Mr Parrikar was speaking at a public function at Velguem, a village located 40 km from the state capital Panaji.

"The process of registration has already begun," said Mr Parrikar, who was the first chief minister in the country to distribute free computers to school students in his first stint as the state's chief minister in 2002.

"The tablets will be loaded with e-contents in terms of curriculum and students can also log in for educational content from other sources," Mr Parrikar said, adding that such an exercise would help the students learn more.

Over 50,000 special tablets with e-learning packages have already been ordered by the Goa government, which is also insisting on a no-objection certificate from the parents before distribution of the tablets.

"It is a no-objection-certificate saying they are OK with us giving them the computers," according to deputy director of the education department Anil Powar.

The parents should also be in a position to guide the students into logging into the right websites, Mr Powar said.
