Goa rape victim wants to withdraw case

Goa rape victim wants to withdraw case
Panaji: The Goa rape case victim has written to the Russian Consulate saying she fears for her life. The Russian has alleged assault by supporters of the rape accused.

She says she now wants to withdraw her case as the police are favoring the accused.

The victim said she immediately rushed to Panaji, 30 km away from the scene, to complain to the police about the attempt to assault her.

While the police claim that they can't get access to the rape accused, NDTV met him and asked for his side of the story. He told NDTV that all the allegations on him are false and politically motivated. He also claimed that he was not summoned by police for questioning.  (Watch: NDTV tracks down Goa rape accused)

However, The Goa Police have claimed that there is no truth in what John Fernandes has said, adding that he was not available for questioning. They also said that the crime branch opposed John's bail plea in High Court.

Meanwhile, high-profile south Goa politician John Fernandes was let off on bail on Tuesday. The anticipatory bail was granted by the south Goa district and sessions court to Fernandes after the defence lawyer argued that there was inconsistency in the victim's statements and that she had been changing her stand often.

Two days ago, the charge on the Goa politician was changed from attempt to rape to rape after the Goa Police Crime Branch stepped in.
