New Delhi: Google is celebrating 168th Birth Anniversary of Annie Besant by posting her animated Doodle on its homepage.
Annie was a reputable British socialist, women's rights activist and writer. She was also supporter of Irish and Indian self-rule.
She was active in union actions including Blood Sunday demonstration and London matchgirls strike of 1888. She was also an eminent speaker for the Fabian Society and the Marxist Social Democratic federation (SDF).
Interestingly, Annie also became a part of Indian politics. During the World War I in 1914, she encouraged the launch of Home Rule League to pitch for democracy in India and dominion status within the Empire.
Later, she became president of the India National Congress in 1917.
