Geetika Sharma, who hanged herself in Delhi on August 5, was exploited by Gopal Goyal Kanda, the politician accused of abetting her suicide, says the National Commission for Women (NCW).
Mr Kanda was a minister in Haryana till Geetika named him in her suicide note. He went underground for 11 days, and remained untraced by the police till he showed up at a police station in Delhi on the weekend and was arrested around 4 am.
Along with Mr Kanda, a woman named Aruna Chaddha who worked for him, has also been arrested for harassing Geetika, who worked for two different companies owned by Mr Kanda and was allegedly blackmailed and intimidated when she tried to quit.
NCW chairperson Mamata Sharma said she met the family of the 23-year-old air hostess on August 9 and feels that Geetika was exploited by her former employers.
Ms Sharma says that Geetika's family believes that the former minister, his lawyers, and the police are colluding in a character assassination of the former air hostess, to help Mr Kanda's case.
Geetika's brother Ankit Sharma said, "We still haven't been given the post-mortem report but it's been leaked to the media. During his (Mr Kanda's) interrogation, a lawyer is allowed to be present, so we want to know what is really happening. Is there pressure on the police in this case?"
Geetika's family members met with the NCW chairperson this afternoon upset with what they call VIP treatment to Mr Kanda.
Ms Sharma has assured all help to Geetika's family and has even reiterated that the police should not feel pressurised just because a politician like Mr Kanda is the prime accused.
After the NCW and Ms Sharma's family complained that her post-mortem report was shared with the media before it was given to them, the Delhi Police has commissioned an inquiry to determine how the papers were leaked.
Meanwhile, Ms Chaddha will remain in judicial custody after a Delhi court rejected a fresh application by the police seeking her custody in the case. Metropolitan Magistrate Devender Kumar Jangala rejected the police plea for the second time in two days.
Police had sought the custody of Ms Chaddha, an official of the now-defunct MDLR Airlines where Geetika was employed, to bring her face-to-face with co-accused Mr Kanda.
Police told the court that Ms Chaddha was misleading the investigators.
She claimed that she joined Mr Kanda's group in 2006 but documents showed that she was appointed in 2004 as general manager, police said.
Police told the court that a warrant purportedly issued in Dubai was sent to Geetika through an email identity created by Shivroop. It was forwarded by Ms Chaddha.
She was arrested August 8 and remained in police custody till August 16. She was later sent to judicial custody.
