New Delhi:
The government failed to persuade Solicitor General Gopal Subramanium to withdraw his resignation, and it was accepted today after the Law Ministry forwarded his resignation to the PMO.
Mr Subramanium had resigned in protest against the government's decision to use a private lawyer in a case involving Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal. Mr Sibal is accused of bending rules to favour Anil Ambani's Reliance Communications, a charge that he has vehemently denied.
Sources say the government's decision to rope in Mr Mistry to represent Mr Sibal in court upset Mr Subramanium, triggering his resignation.
Sources close to the Telecom Minister, though, claimed that Mr Nariman had been appointed in his personal capacity and that the minister hadn't broken protocol.
Mr Subramanium earlier told NDTV that he was resigning "to protect the dignity of the office."
