The Parliamentary Committee on Health and Family Welfare, headed by Bahujan Samaj Party's Satish Mishra has expressed surprise at the removal of Sanjiv Chaturvedi as the Chief Vigilance Officer (CVO) of AIIMS last year.

New Delhi: In an embarrassment to the Centre, a parliamentary panel has pulled up the government over its failure to combat corruption in the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), in a report that has many BJP lawmakers as signatories as well.

The Parliamentary Committee on Health and Family Welfare, headed by Bahujan Samaj Party's Satish Mishra has expressed surprise at the removal of Sanjiv Chaturvedi as the Chief Vigilance Officer (CVO) of the premier state-run institute in August last year. He was removed after he exposed several scams at the hospital and ordered investigations into how officials had made lengthy trips abroad on taxpayers' money.

The Centre had dismissed allegations that Mr Chaturvedi was removed as vendetta for his exposes. Instead, the then Health Minister Harsh Vardhan had said that Mr Chaturvedi had wrongly been appointed the anti-graft watchdog at AIIMS without required clearances

The report of the Committee was tabled in Parliament yesterday, it has urged the government to appoint a regular full time CVO at AIIMS at the earliest. Out of a total of 31 members from both Houses of Parliament, BJP has 13 members in this Committee.

Mr Chaturvedi won the prestigious Ramon Magasaysay award last month, the award, one of Asia's best-known, honours integrity in governance and public service. The Indian Forest Service officer has been out of work for over a year, though he is still attached to AIIMS, but has not been given any work.
