New Delhi:
The government, sources say, is likely to appeal to the Supreme Court against its order to set up a special committee to track and help recover crores of black money.
On Monday, the Supreme Court, in a show of poor confidence in the government, ordered that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) would be headed by a retired judge and would report directly to the court. (Read: Supreme Court appoints investigation team for black money)
The court effectively sidelined a committee that had been set up by the government that was headed by the Revenue Secretary.
The court has repeatedly reprimanded the government for a lethargic inquiry into the Indians who have stashed undeclared money in foreign bank accounts.
Sources say that while he government wants to appeal against the SIT, it is concerned that questioning the Supreme Court order may convey that it is not prepared to go all-out to check black money.
