Grading system for class XII?

New Delhi: Having announced the grading system for CBSE students till class X, Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Kapil Sibal is now mulling with the idea of extending this system to class XII, but aware of the criticism he faced for introducing the grading system the HRD minister said this idea was still at a preliminary stage.

"We had a brainstorming session. Lots of ideas came up. First is to set up a group. It will take three months. Then it will have to be taken up at the Cabinet and we will hold discussions. We want to create an environment where quality of education can be improved,'' said Kapil Sibal, HRD Minister.

The government is concerned about the rising number of suicides in high schools.

To that effect, the grading system would lessen pressure on students.

But considering the number of good colleges fall far short of the number of students who want to get into them, in the grading system the colleges will find it difficult to pick the best students. This is the reason why most state boards have not even accepted the Class X grading system till date.

"We also want the students to de-stress, but introducing this grading system at the moment is not an option for us,'' said Anjani Kumar Singh, Education Secretary of Bihar.

2010 is a test run year for the HRD Ministry. All regional boards will be watching closely - how the CBSE pulls off the new system and how well its students find admissions in top high schools and junior colleges. A success could tilt the balance in favour of the grading system.
