The bride's parents and villagers staged the two-hour-long dharna after the groom and his family did not turn up on the wedding day.
Phagwara, Punjab:
Family members of a girl on Monday staged a dharna in Phagwara demanding the arrest of a groom and his family for not turning up at the wedding in Amrik Nagri village last month.
Led by Sarpanch Satpal Kler, the bride's parents and villagers staged the two-hour-long dharna and submitted a memorandum to SDM Balbir Raj Singh in this regard.
They also threatened to block the road on April 21 if the accused are not arrested by then.
They claimed that Madan Lal of Marnayian village in Hoshiarpur district was slated to marry Mohinderpal's daughter on March 27.
However the groom and his family did not turn up on the wedding day, police said.
Following this, a case under Sections 420 (cheating) and 406 (criminal breach of trust) of IPC was registered against seven persons including Madan Lal, his father Jeet Ram, uncles Manohar and Pappa, aunt Rimpi, the matchmaker Palo and her husband Resham, they said.
The complainants also alleged that the accused were not being arrested due to political pressure, police said.
State Congress General Secretary Joginder Singh Mann, the party's women's wing vice president Balbir Rani Sodhi, Satpal Kler and Tirath Ram, Sarpanches of Amrik Nagri and Bhullarai villages addressed the protesters.
Phagwara DSP Kamalpreet Singh Chahal assured them of doing the needful in the case.
